PVD-Coloured Stainless Steel: A Care Plan for Door Surrounds
A maintenance planning guide for coloured stainless steel door surrounds, covering finish-specific cleaning, exposure and the handling of surface damage.
For a gold or bronze stainless steel doorway, cleaning must suit the supplied substrate, texture and coating. Obtain written care instructions from the finish supplier before handover; a colour name alone does not define a cleaning method. [1]
1. Identify the supplied finish
Keep the approved finish reference, material grade and supplier information with the maintenance records. IMOA explains that the underlying surface affects PVD colour and that the finish supplier should provide the cleaning regime. [1]
2. Agree a gentle routine
Where the supplied finish instructions permit it, routine cleaning can begin with a mild detergent, suitable clean water and a soft cloth, followed by thorough rinsing and drying. Trial a proposed method in an inconspicuous area before treating a visible surface. General stainless steel cleaning advice is not approval for every PVD finish. Avoid abrasive pads and chloride-containing cleaners, and do not improvise a chemical treatment for a coloured doorway. [2] [1]
3. Match frequency to exposure
Plan inspections around the actual entrance conditions. Salt deposits, sheltered recesses and poor drainage can make exposure more demanding. Rain alone should not be treated as a maintenance schedule. ASSDA identifies deposit removal and regular washing as important controls for coastal staining. Use observations from the installed location to agree an appropriate routine with the responsible project team. [3]
4. Escalate damage before experimenting
Photograph scratches, discolouration or persistent marks and identify the component. Abrasion removes colour, and corrosion staining can permanently damage PVD finishes. Ask the finish supplier to assess the condition before attempting restoration; replacement may be required. [1]
Keep a cleaning log covering the location, date, approved method and observed condition. This supports consistent follow-up without implying a universal service-life guarantee. Maintenance planning should accompany finish selection, not replace it.
